Travel Advisory:

New EU Border Rules for Non-Schengen Attendees

Update on EU Border Control: The Entry/Exit System (EES)

If you are traveling to the ISER 2026 Biennial Meeting in Valencia from outside the Schengen Area, please be aware of an important update to European border procedures.

As of April 10, 2026, the European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES) is operational across all Schengen external borders. This system replaces manual passport stamping with a fully digital registration process.

What to Expect at Border Control

  • Digital Registration: Passport stamps are no longer issued. Your entry and exit dates will be recorded electronically in the EES database.
  • Biometric Data Collection: At your first entry under the new system, border officials will collect a facial image and fingerprint scan.
  • Biometric Passports Required: You must travel with an electronic (biometric) passport, identifiable by the chip symbol on the cover.
  • Visa Requirements Remain Unchanged: The EES is not a visa. If your nationality requires a Schengen short-stay visa, you must still apply for and carry it as usual.

Tips for a Smoother Arrival

  • Pre-Register via the Official App: The EU’s free Travel to Europe app allows you to submit passport details and a facial image up to 72 hours before arrival, helping to reduce processing time.
  • Use Automated e-Gates: Look for EES self-service kiosks at the airport—these are typically faster than staffed counters.
  • Allow Extra Time: As the system is newly implemented, border processing may take longer than usual. Please allow additional time, especially for connecting flights.

For the most up-to-date travel requirements, we recommend checking with your airline and your local Spanish consulate before departure.

We look forward to welcoming you to Valencia for ISER 2026!
